Gymnastics – Sarah Nitz Award

Sarah Elizabeth Nitz was an outstanding gymnast from O’Gorman High School who was killed in a car accident on December 21, 1994, on the way to school. She was seven years old when she first began competing in gymnastics. Sarah traveled 35 miles one way to and from Sioux Falls for 11 years to follow her gymnastics dream. The number of hours and the years she dedicated herself to the sport allowed her to accomplish various achievements as a Level 10 National Competitor, as well as being the 1992 & 1993 South Dakota All-Around State Champion. Sarah’s love for gymnastics was overwhelming. She appreciated excellence and effort by any individual. She cheered for any outstanding effort, regardless of the team. Her smile was contagious and her excellent sportsmanship was something all gymnasts admired.

In honor of Sarah, an award will be given each year at the State Gymnastics Meet to a senior gymnast who best exemplifies the qualities Sarah strived for: sportsmanship, academics, character, and gymnastics ability.
