South Dakota Changes



  1. For 2020-21 only, Class A and Class AA will limit the number of dance routines to any two routines. The two routines' scores will be averaged to determine the Grand Champion for Dance. Pom does not have to be one of the routines performed.
  2. Minor changes to the Safety Scoresheet to clarify deductions.
  3. Competitive Dance will have one safety judge and recommends having four performance judges during the regular season. State Competition will have one safety judge and four performance judges. 
  4. In Class A Dance at the State Competition, teams will compete in two of the four dance styles to be eligible for Grand Champion. Those two scores will be averaged to determine the Grand Champion. NOTE: At mixed competitions, host sites shall average the A and AA scores accordingly.
  5. Inquiry Process: Upon completion of each routine, the safety judge will meet with a designated coach in front of the judges table to inform coach of any safety violations. A brief explanation will be shared with the coach. If the conference becomes confrontational, an unsporting deduction may be assessed.
  6. Male Participation: Eliminate female only language from the Competitive Dance section of the SDHSAA Athletic Handbook and revisit number of male participation on a yearly basis to decide upon extended categories to accommodate male participation.
  7. The length of the skirts shall be no longer than mid-calf for safety purposes.
  8. If wearing sheer material, two layers are required, one of which is not nude color. Language in bold is added for clarification.
  9. Require the all coaches, head or assistant, paid or volunteer, for SDHSAA Fall sports complete the "Heat Illness Prevention" course PRIOR to assuming their coaching duties each year.


  1. No glitter hairspray is allowed.
  2. Hair devices shall be safe and secure. The hair shall be worn in a manner to ensure safety while performing. All members of the competitive cheer/dance team shall wear their hair up and away from the face and off their shoulders.
  3. A head judge will be designated for both cheer and dance. Judges scores from low to high shall be no more than 10 points.
